Formative vs Summative Assessment: What’s the Difference?

“Formative” and “summative” are two of the most-used words in teaching — and two of the most muddled. The distinction is actually simple, and getting it right changes how you design and run every check for understanding. Here’s the difference in plain English.

The one-line difference

Formative assessment is assessment for learning. Summative assessment is assessment of learning.

Formative happens during learning to guide what comes next. Summative happens after a chunk of learning to measure what was achieved. Same activity, different purpose — and the purpose is what matters.

Formative assessment

The goal is feedback, not a grade. You’re taking the temperature of the room so you can adjust on the spot. It’s low-stakes by design — learners should feel safe being wrong, because being wrong is the point.

• Examples: a quick live quiz, a discussion board, a drag-and-drop check, exit tickets.
• Feedback: immediate, often shown instantly.
• Stakes: low — usually ungraded.
• Frequency: often, sometimes several times a lesson.

Summative assessment

The goal is to measure and record achievement against a standard — the end-of-unit test, the final project, the certification exam. Because it counts, you generally hold results back until everyone has finished and you’ve reviewed them.

• Examples: end-of-module exam, graded essay, final assessment.
• Feedback: after marking; results released deliberately.
• Stakes: higher — contributes to a grade or pass/fail.
• Frequency: occasional, at natural end points.

A simple rule for choosing

Ask one question: “Am I using this to change my teaching, or to record a result?” If it’s to change your teaching, run it formatively — show scores, discuss the tricky ones, move on. If it’s to record a result, run it summatively — hide scores until release, and keep the conditions consistent.
